Dentistry and teeth floating

A yearly oral exam and float keeps your horse eating well and comfortable in the bridle.

Horses' teeth wear into sharp enamel points that can cut the cheeks and tongue, make chewing hard and cause trouble with the bit.

We sedate your horse for a complete look at the whole mouth, then treat what we find. Our dental services include:

  • Floating, to file down sharp enamel points
  • Finding and treating dental disease
  • Managing loose or broken teeth
  • Treating periodontal (gum) disease
  • Managing misaligned teeth and abnormal bites
  • Problems that come with age

We recommend a dental exam once a year for most horses, from young horses to seniors. If yours needs to be seen more often, we'll tell you.

At the clinic or your barn

We float teeth at the clinic or at your place on weekdays. We don't schedule floats on Saturdays, so the on-call doctor is free for emergencies. For a farm visit you'll need running water, electricity and a stall or similar space to work in. Plan on about 30 minutes per horse. Bigger groups may be split across more than one visit.
