Showing under USEF rules
Microchips and vaccine schedules for show horses
At USEF-licensed competitions, horses over 7 months old must show proof of equine influenza and equine herpesvirus (rhino) vaccines given within six months before entering the stables. Horses competing in classes that need USHJA registration must also have an ISO-compliant microchip implanted in the nuchal ligament.
Microchipping should be done by a veterinarian, and it's quick. Your Nebraska Equine vaccine invoice serves as proof of vaccination at USEF events. Rules change, so check the current requirements at usef.org.

Every 6 months · most horses and all FEI horses
Twice a year
- Spring: Eastern and Western encephalitis, tetanus, rhino, flu and West Nile, plus rabies and strangles
- Fall: Rhino and flu
Show schedules can sometimes conflict with this timing.
Every 4 months · if shows conflict
Three times a year
- Spring: Eastern and Western encephalitis, tetanus, rhino, flu and West Nile, plus rabies and strangles
- Summer: Rhino and flu
